JUNE DINNER MEETING

Date:                Thursday, June 17, 2010

Place:               Fat City Bar & Cafe

1001 Front Street

Old Sacramento

Time:                5:30pm – 7:30pm

Please join us for a dinner meeting as we support our local UC Davis graduate students who will be presenting their current graduate projects.  This will be an excellent opportunity to see the future of geotechnical engineering and network with your peers in the geotechnical community.

Three UC Davis PhD Candidates will be presenting their research projects.

Lijun Deng will be presenting on innovative bridge design allowing rocking foundations.  A design philosophy for ordinary soil-footing-column-deck bridge systems in seismic-prone zones will be presented.  The design philosophy presents the use of rocking spread footings as the principal nonlinear component as an alternative to the conventional design that puts all ductility demand on the columns.

Jui-Ching Chou will be presenting on centrifuge modeling and numerical simulation of the BART Transbay Tube.  The BART Transbay Tube is a cut-and-cover subway tunnel located in a high seismic area.  Centrifuge model tests and numerical analyses were performed to study the tunnel stability, confirm the uplift mechanisms and validate the numerical tools.

Brian Martinez will be presenting on upscaling microbial induced calcite precipitation.  Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP), involving ureolytically induced pH increase by the bacteria Sporoscarcina pasteurii to prime conditions for calcite precipitation offers an economically feasible and environmentally conscience alternative for ground improvement techniques.  This presentation will highlight recent geotechnical and geochemical results, demonstrating the potential and current status of this new technology.

Cost:                $30 for ASCE Members, Students $25
