Northern California Transportation Regional Investment Forecast
The ASCE Sacramento Section Construction Institute hosted the Northern California Transportation Regional Investment Forecast in Sacramento on May 27, 2009. The event held at the Hyatt, Sacramento featured a distinguished keynote speaker and a panel of experts discussing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for highways and transportation. Over 210 design and construction professionals and students were in attendance.

Construction Institute Regional Forum: Reaching Out to Younger Members By Larry J. Smith, P.E., CCM, F.ASCE
Chair Sacramento Section Construction Institutue One of the Construction Institute's (CI’s) goals is to facilitate increased collaboration amongst all individuals working within the construction industry. In response to the challenges the construction industry is facing in retaining young engineers, and the possibility of losing institutional knowledge and experience when leaders retire, CI’s Younger Members Directorate created a comprehensive program allowing those just entering the industry to connect with leaders inorder to refine their skills on the job. On January 15 – 16, 2009 five Sacramento Section Construction Institute members attended the CI Regional Forum in Los Angeles, CA to “Meet the Leaders” and heard about their concerns and struggles as they shared them with an audience of approximately 50 young engineers and industry professionals attending this event. The leaders identified traits of successful leadership, such as flexibility, the ability to motivate people and the ability to make decisions. Attendees were reminded of the many leadership opportunities available to all members through ASCE Section, Branch and Institute involvement. Read more>>
Professional Associations Build and Enhance Careers:Career-building for public and private sector professionals By Larry J. Smith, P.E., CCM When asked to speak to about the benefits of professional associations or tips on how to build one’s career I think of advice received over 20 years ago.
“Everyone must realize that good career management comes out of your own pocket.”
There will be times when you’ll need to invest in your own training and development and to make the time necessary to build and sustain a promising career.
