The 2010 – 2011 Joint Scholarships of the Construction Institute Chapters of the Sacramento and San Francisco Sections are being awarded to six students in Civil Engineering and Construction Management Programs. Nineteen well qualified applicants from eight Northern California Universities were evaluated by the Committee. The top three choices will receive $3,000 each, and three will receive $2,000 each. The Scholarships will be presented to the Students accompanied by a Faculty Member of their choice, at the ASCE CI Student Days in Folsom, CA on September 09, 2011.Top winners are Mike Jacobs from CSU Fresno, Daniel Wanner from San Jose State University and Jaime Shien Chou from San Jose State University. In evaluating applicants, the Scholarship Committee evaluated each candidate for meeting the base requirements specified in the scholarship announcement. Upon meeting the requirements the committee evaluated individual talent, skill, work ethic, and unique qualities of each applicant. After evaluation, the committee reports that this year’s scholarship recipients exhibited the skills and talents necessary to succeed, but furthermore, the attitude and stability that comes with life experiences and “real-world” exposure.

The Scholarship Committee is pleased to introduce each of this year’s Construction Institute Scholarship recipients.
Mike Jacobs
Mike is a Senior Construction Management major at CSU Fresno. He is involved in Students in Construction, having held the position of Vice President, and now President. Mike was the superintendent for the Design Build team during the 2011 ASC Reno Competition, and plans to compete as the project manager and team leader in 2012. While attending school, Mike has also juggled internships, starting at Ashwood Construction as an Assistant Superintendent on a $7 million multi-family housing project. He is currently interning at The Whiting Turner Contracting Company, working on an $11 million retail project. Mike feels that his future in construction will allow him to learn something new every day and by taking risks and working hard, he will be successful.
Daniel Wanner
Daniel is a Senior Civil Engineering and Specification Construction Management dual major at San Jose State University, also minoring in Mathematics. An active ASCE member, Daniel has served as club room manager and Vice President of the San Jose Student Chapter. He is also a member of the SJSU Associated General Contractors and the SJSU American Concrete Institute, and is the Co-Events Coordinator for the Chi Epsilon Honor Society. As the Co-Captain and Construction Manager for the SJSU Concrete Canoe Competition, Daniel led his team for over three years and 500 hours. Daniel plans to get a Master’s Degree in Construction Management, become a professional engineer, and work as a construction manager. He hopes to contribute to the industry to make construction more efficient and sustainable.
Jaime Shien Chou
Jaime is a Senior Construction Management major at San Jose State University. He has been on the Dean’s List twice and earned the Dean’s Scholarship in 2011. Jaime is involved in various clubs on campus, including serving as the Vice President of the SJ Student Chapter of American Concrete Institute, and serving as Treasurer of the Chi Epsilon Honor Society. Jaime worked as a CAD Drafter for KB Design and Consulting, and now interns for Caltrans-Structure Construction. Jaime’s career goal is to improve communication among members of a construction project. He hopes to become a consultant in heavy civil by establishing a solid background in technical and managing skills.
Kyle Deller
Kyle is a Senior Construction Management major at CSU Chico. He is the Vice President of the Chico Student Chapter Design Build Institute of America, and is a Blitz Build Safety Officer for the Chico State College of Engineering Leadership Team. He has done volunteer construction work through the Habitat for Humanity, and hopes to continue his volunteer work in a position that allows him to combine construction and volunteering. He interned for Granite Construction Company as a Field Engineer assisting in SWPPP operations. Kyle has an interest in sustainable construction methods and hopes to work on large projects while making a small impact on the environment.
Dane Petersen
Dane is a Junior Construction Management major and a Business minor at CSU Chico. He has earned the Industry Action Scholarship and has been on the Dean’s List, while being an active member of the American General Contractors student chapter and the Design Build Institute of America student chapter. Dane has worked as a construction laborer for the Catalyst Domestic Violence Services in Chico, CA and the Amor Ministries in San Diego, CA. He currently works as an Engineering Intern for the Bay Area Rapid Transit Engineering Department, assisting on a $10 million switchgear installation. He hopes to help the construction industry become more environmentally friendly and cost-effective by incorporating recycling and repurposing of materials to reduce construction waste. Dane’s career goals include becoming a project manager, increasing awareness and use of eco-friendly construction techniques, and continuing to volunteer in the community.
Quinn Peck
Quinn is a Senior Structural Engineering major at Santa Clara University. He has earned several awards and scholarships, has consistently been on the Dean’s List, and has served as the Vice President of both the ASCE and the American Construction Institute Student Chapters. Quinn has worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant for the Department of Civil Engineering on campus, investigating lateral load resistant design of light-frame cold-formed steel frames. He is currently working as a Student Employee for the Civil Engineering Department, overseeing the remodel and makeover of the Materials and Structures Laboratory and assisting to elevate the laboratory’s safety, usability, and efficiency. Quinn hopes that his educational and research background will lead him to a position allowing him to participate in the design and construction of steel structures.
